Many investment firms offer products across a range of investment types, and as a result may devote only a portion of their resources to alternative investments such as hedge funds or managed futures.

The Altegris model is different. As is noted below in the section titled "Our Role," we are not an Investment Adviser. Rather, we act as a Broker-Dealer and Introducing Broker. While we seek to understand your overall portfolio, we don't offer traditional investments. Instead, we devote all of our resources to finding and securing access to what we believe are quality money managers in the alternative investments space, and to bringing these opportunities to our clients.

A Changing Alternative Investment Landscape

The alternative investment landscape is growing, and becoming more complex. With respect to hedge funds alone, the sheer number of funds has increased from an estimated 610 in 1990 to over 9,200 in 2006.¹ Styles and strategies are constantly evolving as talented managers continue to innovate and search for new ways of making money on behalf of their clients.

The Altegris Focused Approach

It is our belief that the complex and evolving alternative investment landscape demands a high degree of focus and deep understanding. We use our significant industry experience, contacts and rigorous quantitative and qualitative analysis to find, select, and negotiate capacity with what we believe are high quality money managers in the alternative investments space.

Our Role

In working with clients, Altegris acts in its capacity as a SEC registered broker dealer and a CFTC registered introducing broker. Although we may give advice that is incidental to our brokerage services, we are not an investment adviser. Altegris has entered into selling agreements with all of the investment products that we offer (including investment products of our affiliates), pursuant to which we are paid fees by the investment product or its manager in connection with sales we make. This enables us to offer you products on our platform without charging fees above those charged by the products that we offer.

Altegris may also act as an introducing broker for individually managed futures accounts and to some of the funds we market and, as such, also may receive a portion of the commodity brokerage commissions paid in connection with their futures trading and/or receive a portion of the interest income (if any) earned on an account's assets. Certain commodity trading advisors may also pay Altegris a portion of the fees they receive from accounts introduced to them by Altegris. These arrangements create certain conflicts of interest. Before seeking any advisor's services or making an investment in a hedge fund or managed futures fund, we encourage you to ask questions and carefully read any offering documents, to make sure you fully understand the capacity in which Altegris is acting and the conflicts of interest that exist.

Alternative investment products, including hedge funds and managed futures, involve a high degree of risk, often engage in leveraging and other speculative investment practices that may increase the risk of investment loss, can be highly illiquid, are not required to provide periodic pricing or valuation information to investors, may involve complex tax structures and delays in distributing important tax information, are not subject to the same regulatory requirements as mutual funds, often charge high fees which may offset any trading profits, and in many cases the underlying investments are not transparent and are known only to the investment manager. Alternative investment performance can be volatile. An investor could lose all or a substantial amount of his or her investment. Often, alternative investment fund and account managers have total trading authority over their funds or accounts; the use of a single advisor applying generally similar trading programs could mean lack of diversification and, consequently, higher risk. There is often no secondary market for an investor's interest in alternative investments, and none is expected to develop. There may be restrictions on transferring interests in any alternative investment. Alternative investment products often execute a substantial portion of their trades on non-U.S. exchanges. Investing in foreign markets may entail risks that differ from those associated with investments in U.S. markets. Altegris, a FINRA and NFA member, offers various alternative investments, including hedge funds, futures funds and managed futures and commodities accounts, that may operate in commodities markets and foreign markets, among others. Altegris and/or its officers/partners may have a financial interest in such alternative investments. In working with clients, Altegris acts in its capacity as an SEC-registered Broker-Dealer and/or as a CFTC-registered Introducing Broker. Although Altegris may give advice that is incidental to its brokerage services, it is not an Investment Adviser. When acting as an Introducing Broker for individually managed accounts, Altegris receives a portion of the commodity brokerage commissions you pay in connection with your futures trading and/or a portion of the interest income (if any) earned on an account's assets. CTAs may also pay Altegris a portion of the fees they receive from accounts introduced to them by Altegris. When acting as a Broker-Dealer, Altegris enters into selling agreements with hedge funds and futures funds that it offers (including funds sponsored by affiliates), pursuant to which Altegris, with respect to the interests it sells, is paid a portion of the management and/or performance fees charged by the funds or their managers in respect of those interests. This enables Altegris to offer hedge funds, futures funds and individually managed accounts without charging fees above those charged by the CTAs, funds or managers.
