Kamal Jafarnia brings more than 25 years of experience as an attorney and compliance professional to his role with Altegris, having advised public and private companies—including alternative investment program sponsors—on complex securities offerings, regulatory and compliance issues, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance.
As General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, Mr. Jafarnia is responsible for ensuring that asset managers, wealth managers, financial advisors, and investor clients remain in full compliance through the capital raising and investor communications process.
Prior to joining Altegris, Mr. Jafarnia held a multi-faceted role with W.P. Carey, a large diversified real estate asset manager and REIT. W.P. Carey is based in New York and has more than $23 billion in total assets under management (as of 06/30/18). Kamal served as Senior Vice President of W.P. Carey; Executive Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer, and General Counsel of Carey Financial; and Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of Carey Credit Advisors.
Previous to W.P. Carey, Mr. Jafarnia served as counsel in the REIT and securities practice at the international law firm of Greenberg Traurig, LLP in New York. He also counseled funds and broker-dealers as a member of the financial services and products practice group with Alston & Bird LLP in New York.
Earlier in his career, Kamal was an early-stage Partner with Franklin Square Capital Partners (now known as FS Investments), an alternative asset manager headquartered in Philadelphia with $24 billion in assets under management (as of 06/30/18). With Franklin Square, he served as Executive Vice President of Legal and Corporate Development and Chief Compliance Officer. Prior to Franklin Square, Mr. Jafarnia was Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of the predecessor company to Provasi Capital Partners, an alternative investment sponsor and distributor based in Dallas, TX.
Mr. Jafarnia received his LLM in securities and financial regulation from Georgetown University Law Center, and graduated from Temple University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He also holds his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and government from the University of Texas at Austin.
